I have just come back from my trip to Switzerland, and of course shopping is part of what we do when we leave home.  But it is not the same as shopping at home. First I noticed that my attitude to money is quite different – different in the way I look at prices. After a few days when I have gotten used to the currency, and don’t calculate anymore how much something is in dollars, I pay 100 Swiss Francs for a pair of shoes without thinking that it is expensive – where here at home I would think twice about paying that much.

Well, it is part of our holiday mood – we think that we deserve these treats when we are on vacation, and we do! But be careful not to get carried away by your surroundings, by spending the extra money for something you can not use once you are back home.

Don’t fall in love with an adorable summer dress only appropriate for the beach – but not useful when you are back in New York. Or have you ever come home with a huge straw hat? Now only a reminder of that wonderful stay in the Bahamas! By all means go shopping, have fun, but buy something that will  remind you of your vacation while wearing it back home.

Oh, yes the shoes I bought are  something I will wear all summer – they are beige snake-skin, with a medium size heel, and very comfortable. But I had a moment of hesitation. There was also a pair of sexy, red ones with  very high heels, and my holiday mood was more for sexy and daring —- but then I took my own advice and bought what will be useful this spring and summer.

When we fall in love with a pair of shoes, and the salesman says, “Sorry, we don’t have them in eight and a half” – we convince ourselves that size 8, which we are trying on, really doesn’t feel so tight, even if our big toe is going to sleep.

Here are a few ideas to help you get the right size:

-Buy your shoes in the afternoon,  or after you have been on your feet for a few hours -in the morning when your feet are rested, they will be half a size smaller than later in the day.

– See if there is an area that is not carpeted in the store – and walk there for a minutes, you will feel the difference – a soft carpet makes every shoe feel so much more comfortable

– and most important – when the salesman says, “Don’t worry they will stretch. DON’T BELIEVE HIM! (Check in your wardrobe how man shoes you have which didn’t stretch!)

– the shoes you buy must feel so comfortable that you would like to walk out of the store with them –

Don’t compromise – you owe it to your feet to give them a comfortable home.

See you tomorrow

Hello Everyone

Today I will start giving you  ONE TIP  a day – to help you look your best, and to make your life easier by having the perfect wardrobe.

The first serie of tips will be on how to buy your clothes because that is where it all starts — and that is where the mistakes are made.scan0004- 2

TIP NO I – Beware of Sales – especially at this time of the year when all stores are advertising big reductions, sometimes up to 70%. I have to admit I have never seen anything reduced by 70% but it made me come in the store. So if you go in, hang on to your purse, make sure you need what you buy.

See you tomorrow

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 2,400 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 4 years to get that many views.

Hello Everyone

75% Off – 90% Off is like  magic – it pulls us into the stores every time, and at this time of the year there is hardly a store not advertising what they promise to give away.

But beware …. the reason you can  buy a top for $12 is because it is a left over from the last season. Do you really want a left over? Do you really need it? Or are you buying it because it is reduced? Most of us don’t need to add another t-shirt to the other 15 in our closet.

Therefore, if you see the sales signs – walk on – don’t even go in the store thinking ‘let me just see what they have’ – they have nothing you want for the coming season.

It is wiser to keep the $12 and all the other twelve dollars and put the money towards your fall wardrobe. Soon the new collections are in the stores –  of course, they will be full price, but not having spend your money in the sales, you can, and you will enjoy buying an item that is the latest look. It  will make you  look up-to-date, and it will make you feel good.

When buying a dress that you will wear mostly when sitting, such as at dinner or the theatre, or even behind a desk, make sure that the top is flattering to your face. Don’t wear styles that have all the design and interest in the skirt.

Until the next time

Hello Everyone

Since skirts and dresses are going to be an  important part of our summer wardrobe this year, we must make sure that the length of the skirt is becoming for our legs. And remember legs play a big part in looking feminine and sexy. As the fashion magazine show, this summer any length is worn.

So which length is best for you? This depends on what kind of legs you have and how much you want to show. If your legs are beautiful and without any marks you can wear your skirt above the knee – maybe two or three inches.

If you feel that this not the best for you, or it is not appropriate for your lifestyle, try two inches below the knee. But if you go longer, remember that skirts to the floor are nice for evenings, the beach, the weekend, a party but not for business.

Small women have to be especially careful to find the right length, because if the skirt is too long, it makes her look as if she’s standing in a hole. And when  finding a skirt you like, that is it too long, remember any Dry Cleaner has staff that does alterations.

I once had a customer who was five feet tall. Her skirt, made from a lovely beige fabric, reached her ankles. When I said what a pity it was that we could not see her legs and that her skirt should be shorter, she said, “Oh, I wouldn’t cut this lovely fabric. I paid $95 for this skirt.” I made one more attempt, but she repeated that the fabric was too good to be cut. I guess she was afraid of losing $20.

Note: This is a typical example of a garment wearing the person and not the person the garment. Don’t ever forget that clothes are there for you, not you for them.

The most flattering length for ninety-five percent of all women is just below the knee. For s SHORT WOMAN, it would be about an inch below the knee, and for a TALLER WOMAN two inches or more but not longer than mid calf, or it can look dowdy.

To find the best length for you, you must take the trouble to try your clothes on and look at them. To see how a skirt will look shorter, turn the waistband over once, twice, or more. With a dress, use a belt to pull the dress up to a length which you think suits you. If a skirt is too short, you can take the hem down, providing there is enough hem there. In order to save on fabric the hems are often very narrow. So when you buy a skirt or dress and need to take the hem down, make sure there is enough to take down.

The reason you should look at each garment in your wardrobe individually, is because the right length can be affected by cut, the weight of the fabric and even colour. A straight skirt in a dark, heavy material can be shorter than a light, full skirt, which needs a bit more length so you won’t look like a little girl.

No, I am not going to talk about the short, short skirts,  those which are difficult to sit down in, and just cover the crotch, because I don’t think it is matter of length anymore, but more about ‘where is the rest of the dress?’

Until the next time

Hello Everybody

If you are thinking of buying a dress this summer, the shirtwaist dress is your answer. It is one of the most useful dresses you can own, and this year it has made a comeback. It is useful because it is appropriate for many occasions. It looks well in any fabric – cotton, silk, linen – and it is stunning in gold or lame fabrics. Which fabric you chose depends on where you want to wear it

It does change its style slightly depending on fashion trends, but it always has collar, a buttoned front (at least to the waist, and sleeves). And it is becoming for all figure types. A SLIM WOMAN can wear a shirtwaist dress with a belt and a full skirt; a HEAVIER WOMAN can wear it with a straight skirt and no belt. It looks good with a short skirt or a long skirt. However, if the skirt is long, leave the last few buttons open. It looks good with long sleeves and short sleeves.

Of course, how you wear it is also important. A customer of mine came to me with a shirtwaist dress that she had just bought but which her husband disliked. ‘He can’t say why, he just doesn’t like it.’ I asked her to put it on. She buttoned it up to the top, fastened the sleeves neatly at the wrist, and buckled the belt loosely around her waist. Result: no shape and no sex appeal! I asked her to open the top three buttons, roll the sleeves halfway up her lower arm, and pull the belt tight to show her waist. Now, it was a different dress, which her husband thought was much better than the one she wore before, never realizing that it was the same dress.

Note- When you decide how far a dress or blouse can be unbuttoned, don’t look down at yourself. You will see a lot more than anyone else looking at you. To see what others see, look straight into the mirror and then decide how much you want to show.

Until the next time

It is Springtime and we are ready for some new clothes. But before you rush out and put your credit card on the counter look at what is in your wardrobe  – put the sweaters aside and take out what you wore last spring and summer, including shoes and handbags.

Do as I say and not as I do – I just bought a bright turquoise bag, because I thought I needed a new summer bag, only to find out that I have a very nice multi-color one I bought at the end of last summer. No, there is nothing wrong in having two bags, but maybe you want to spend you money on something you need more?

Don’t forget to try on what you have – we often remember a blouse looking very nice, only to find out that we don’t like it anymore.Or that something does not fit anymore – so weed out your wardrobe by trying on what you have, and eliminate what you don’t feel comfortable in -yes, even if you have not worn it much – don’t accommodate your clothes, they have to work for you by making you feel comfortable and confident.

Now to what you buy, keep in mind that everything is bright this season – really bright.  But since you can’t and won’t even want an all bright wardrobe, add a bright blazer to wear with your jeans

And look at the shoes in this picture – wedge-platform shoes are the latest look. And they are more comfortable than you might think. I just found a pair that feel like slippers – the wedge allows you to have a higher heel which is offset by the sole.

Another way to add color are prints – the choice we have is pretty and very varied – really for every taste. A pretty patterned top will bring a business suit up-to-date.

I know it is a little work and you will need an afternoon to do what I am suggesting, but knowing what you have in your wardrobe, and what goes with what will save you time and money in the season to come.

Until the next time – I want to wish you

Hello Everyone

The idea of improving or supporting the breasts goes back a long way. Greek women wore a kind of band around the chest. It served its purpose but did not give a sensual look. When the corset came. engulfing the whole figure, breasts looked sexy and provocative but women were not always comfortable. Today we’re lucky because we can look sexy and be comfortable at the same time, providing we find the right bra. I recently read that over 80% of women do not buy the right size or shape. Here are some tips to help you.

– a slightly padded bra, the type that is padded all over. It feels like several layers of material without any rubber inside

– a bra that is padded only on the lower part of the cup. The padding is like a small pillow supporting the breasts.

– a bra with a underwire. This always helps to push the breasts up and give a fuller look

– a push-up bra. Some of you might remember the one Warner brought out in 1969. It was sexy, exposing part of the breast and a the same time giving an illusion of volume. and they are still around today. The straps must be on the outside of the cup to create a fuller look by really lifting the breasts.

– a bra with molded cups, if you want your bust to look round not pointy. If you want a pointed look buy bras with seams and darts in the cups.

NOTE: A word of caution. If you want your bust to look bigger or more seductive, stay away from the soft n0-bra looks. The molded ones give the same general effect as the no-bra look, but they will give you a better shape.

a push-up bra that pushes the breasts both up and together gives the best effect

– demi-cup bra is another style for a provocative look. It leaves the upper part of the breasts exposed, plus showing a cleavage.

– a push-up bra that is cut away in the middle, exposing the breasts. If you have a natural cleavage and want to show it, don’t wear bras with molded full cups; instead wear lacy ones open at the middle.

– and if you want to wear a plunging neckline without showing your cleavage, choose a bra with cups far apart and connected by only a small piece of elastic. It will separate the breasts and allow you to be sexy without being obvious.

Many styles in a small or medium size have the closure in front. This is not only more comfortable when getting dressed, but also moe gracious when getting undressed. If you have a choice and are not sacrificing the style and shape you want, choose a bra that fastens in the front.

– a minimizer bra will reduce the breasts up to one size. It does this by pulling the breasts apart rather than pushing them together.

– a bra with round cups, not pointed ones. The pointed type adds volume to a large bust

– an underwire bra with molded round cups. It separated the breasts and gives a youthful look

– a bra that does not pull the breasts up too high. To avoid this be sure the straps are in the middle of the cup, over the nipples.

NOTES: A word of caution here – pay special attention to the straps of your bras. They must be adjusted so as not to pull your breasts up too high, but high enough to avoid sagging. How they feel is not the only factor here; see how you look with your outer garment on. Yes, when you try on bras and you think you found the right one, put your t-shirt or sweater on and see how it looks. This is very helpful, because a pretty bra might not look so pretty under a garment – so check it out.

A sagging look can often result if the elastic straps are worn out. A drooping bust looks heavy and not at all sensual. Remember that a firm, upstanding shape will improve your image one hundred percent.

And if the back of your bra is riding up, it means that you are wearing the wrong size.

And when buying a bra, do get the matching panties right away. Better yet, get two pairs, as they wear out faster than bras.

I know from experience that finding the right bra is not an easy task – the number of bras that await us in any department store is so overwhelming. My reaction is  ‘how can I possibly find what is right for me among the hundreds and hundreds of bras.’ To overcome this taunting task, try a specialty store. There are more and more of them, and that might be because more and more women  appreciate the help of an expert.

May your future purchases be a little easier and until the next time
