TIP OF THE DAY NO. 35 – SHOPPING WHILE TRAVELLING

TIP NO. 35 – SHOPPING WHILE TRAVELLING

I have just come back from my trip to Switzerland, and of course shopping is part of what we do when we leave home.  But it is not the same as shopping at home. First I noticed that my attitude to money is quite different – different in the way I look at prices. After a few days when I have gotten used to the currency, and don’t calculate anymore how much something is in dollars, I pay 100 Swiss Francs for a pair of shoes without thinking that it is expensive – where here at home I would think twice about paying that much.

Well, it is part of our holiday mood – we think that we deserve these treats when we are on vacation, and we do! But be careful not to get carried away by your surroundings, by spending the extra money for something you can not use once you are back home.

Don’t fall in love with an adorable summer dress only appropriate for the beach – but not useful when you are back in New York. Or have you ever come home with a huge straw hat? Now only a reminder of that wonderful stay in the Bahamas! By all means go shopping, have fun, but buy something that will  remind you of your vacation while wearing it back home.

Oh, yes the shoes I bought are  something I will wear all summer – they are beige snake-skin, with a medium size heel, and very comfortable. But I had a moment of hesitation. There was also a pair of sexy, red ones with  very high heels, and my holiday mood was more for sexy and daring —- but then I took my own advice and bought what will be useful this spring and summer.

TIP OF THE DAY NO. 32 – BUY SHOES WHICH DON’T HURT

TIP NO. 32 – BUY SHOES WHICH DON’T HURT

When we fall in love with a pair of shoes, and the salesman says, “Sorry, we don’t have them in eight and a half” – we convince ourselves that size 8, which we are trying on, really doesn’t feel so tight, even if our big toe is going to sleep.

Here are a few ideas to help you get the right size:

-Buy your shoes in the afternoon,  or after you have been on your feet for a few hours -in the morning when your feet are rested, they will be half a size smaller than later in the day.

– See if there is an area that is not carpeted in the store – and walk there for a minutes, you will feel the difference – a soft carpet makes every shoe feel so much more comfortable

– and most important – when the salesman says, “Don’t worry they will stretch. DON’T BELIEVE HIM! (Check in your wardrobe how man shoes you have which didn’t stretch!)

– the shoes you buy must feel so comfortable that you would like to walk out of the store with them –

Don’t compromise – you owe it to your feet to give them a comfortable home.

Hello Everyone

Today I will start giving you  ONE TIP  a day – to help you look your best, and to make your life easier by having the perfect wardrobe.

The first serie of tips will be on how to buy your clothes because that is where it all starts — and that is where the mistakes are made.scan0004- 2

TIP NO I – Beware of Sales – especially at this time of the year when all stores are advertising big reductions, sometimes up to 70%. I have to admit I have never seen anything reduced by 70% but it made me come in the store. So if you go in, hang on to your purse, make sure you need what you buy.

See you tomorrow

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 2,400 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 4 years to get that many views.

SALES – BEWARE! BEWARE!

Hello Everyone

75% Off – 90% Off is like  magic – it pulls us into the stores every time, and at this time of the year there is hardly a store not advertising what they promise to give away.

But beware …. the reason you can  buy a top for $12 is because it is a left over from the last season. Do you really want a left over? Do you really need it? Or are you buying it because it is reduced? Most of us don’t need to add another t-shirt to the other 15 in our closet.

Therefore, if you see the sales signs – walk on – don’t even go in the store thinking ‘let me just see what they have’ – they have nothing you want for the coming season.

It is wiser to keep the $12 and all the other twelve dollars and put the money towards your fall wardrobe. Soon the new collections are in the stores –  of course, they will be full price, but not having spend your money in the sales, you can, and you will enjoy buying an item that is the latest look. It  will make you  look up-to-date, and it will make you feel good.

FASHION TIP – BUYING A DRESS

When buying a dress that you will wear mostly when sitting, such as at dinner or the theatre, or even behind a desk, make sure that the top is flattering to your face. Don’t wear styles that have all the design and interest in the skirt.

SKIRTS – WHICH IS THE BEST LENGTH FOR YOU?

Hello Everyone

Since skirts and dresses are going to be an  important part of our summer wardrobe this year, we must make sure that the length of the skirt is becoming for our legs. And remember legs play a big part in looking feminine and sexy. As the fashion magazine show, this summer any length is worn.

So which length is best for you? This depends on what kind of legs you have and how much you want to show. If your legs are beautiful and without any marks you can wear your skirt above the knee – maybe two or three inches.

If you feel that this not the best for you, or it is not appropriate for your lifestyle, try two inches below the knee. But if you go longer, remember that skirts to the floor are nice for evenings, the beach, the weekend, a party but not for business.

Small women have to be especially careful to find the right length, because if the skirt is too long, it makes her look as if she’s standing in a hole. And when  finding a skirt you like, that is it too long, remember any Dry Cleaner has staff that does alterations.

I once had a customer who was five feet tall. Her skirt, made from a lovely beige fabric, reached her ankles. When I said what a pity it was that we could not see her legs and that her skirt should be shorter, she said, “Oh, I wouldn’t cut this lovely fabric. I paid $95 for this skirt.” I made one more attempt, but she repeated that the fabric was too good to be cut. I guess she was afraid of losing $20.

Note: This is a typical example of a garment wearing the person and not the person the garment. Don’t ever forget that clothes are there for you, not you for them.

The most flattering length for ninety-five percent of all women is just below the knee. For s SHORT WOMAN, it would be about an inch below the knee, and for a TALLER WOMAN two inches or more but not longer than mid calf, or it can look dowdy.

To find the best length for you, you must take the trouble to try your clothes on and look at them. To see how a skirt will look shorter, turn the waistband over once, twice, or more. With a dress, use a belt to pull the dress up to a length which you think suits you. If a skirt is too short, you can take the hem down, providing there is enough hem there. In order to save on fabric the hems are often very narrow. So when you buy a skirt or dress and need to take the hem down, make sure there is enough to take down.

The reason you should look at each garment in your wardrobe individually, is because the right length can be affected by cut, the weight of the fabric and even colour. A straight skirt in a dark, heavy material can be shorter than a light, full skirt, which needs a bit more length so you won’t look like a little girl.

No, I am not going to talk about the short, short skirts,  those which are difficult to sit down in, and just cover the crotch, because I don’t think it is matter of length anymore, but more about ‘where is the rest of the dress?’
